Personal development is a way for colleagues to assess their skills and qualities, consider their aims in life and set goals in order to realise and maximise their potential.

 

People working in health are encouraged to review their goals and achievements on a regular basis and to maintain a personal development plan (PDP). It's about working our your starting point, where you want to be and consequently, setting goals.* 

Your PDP is the key output of your appraisal, which represents a formal agreement, between the appraisee and the appraiser, on the learning and development needs of the appraisee, identified within the appraisal, with an outcome based learning plan for the following year.**

It is important to ensure you keep up to date with your appraisals if work pressures allow.

All sessions include course notes and a workbook with a umber of techniques and exerises for staff to work through as well as a reflective journal as optional resources, aimed at getting the most from these key targeted sessions.

About the trainers

Martin J Smith PhD

Martin is an independent training consultant and heads up ITC Consulting. He has been a trainer for over 30 years and in clinical private practice as a Psychotherapist for over 20 years. He has a long association with a number of large organisations across the UK including the Conciliation service ACAS and the NHS both as a trainer and as a coach / therapist for staff at all levels of the organisation. He has particular interest and specialises in all forms of anxiety, trauma and phobias as well as issues around extreme difficult personality types and the management of such personalities.

He also has extensive management experience at various levels in large public organisations which together with his clinical skills in therapy, coaching and psychology help to make a blend that makes his training and therapy work interesting and functional in the world today. He presents to a variety of Public and Private Organisations both here in the UK and in the United States of America.

He is a past member of The Institute for Leadership and Management – ILM as well as a life member of the Open University Psychological Society and a senior accredited member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy - BACP.

He holds a Post Graduate Diploma in psychotherapy working from solution focused and brief therapy methods. He has a Bachelors degree in Psychotherapy and a Doctorate in Counselling Psychology.

 

Ken Way BSc Psy

Ken is a highly experienced trainer and business coach who started his career as a research psychologist, completing projects for the UK Government’s ‘Sports Council’, amongst others, before working independently with a wide range of organisations in both the public and private sectors.

Ken specialises in running management development programmes focused on what are often called ‘soft skills’ – including aspects such as leadership, influencing styles and strategies, handling conflict, interpersonal skills, communication skills, etc.

Ken holds a number of qualifications in psychology, psychotherapy and related fields and his highly flexible approach enables him to work effectively with individuals and teams with diverse backgrounds and experience.
