Developing a robust and flexible workforce
South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw’s health and care workforce provide services 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. To support our teams to continue providing excellent care we need to invest in them and our future workforce.
We employ over 48,000 members of health and care staff who work to meet the needs of 1.5 million people in our system, and this figure is boosted by those working for independent or private health and care organisations.
Our ICS works closely with Health Education England (HEE) and NHS England and Improvement (NHSE/I) to support our partner organisations via a range of programmes, which support the national ambitions set out in the NHS People Plan.
Supporting positive health and wellbeing has always been a priority for our system, but this has accelerated in light of the demands on our workforce in responding to Covid 19. An ICS programme is underway to ensure access to wellbeing services for those who require it, building on a range of national solutions made available to the health and care workforce (you can find out more on the national website).
We aim to ensure equality, diversity and inclusion is at the heart of everything we do so that we maximise the skills and expertise of our workforce and wider community.
As set-out in our Five Year Plan (2019 – 2024) we aim to tackle existing or planned workforce shortages through a range of programmes that support:
- Strong supply routes (schools, universities, and promoting health and care careers to secure the workforce of the future)
- Upskilling our workforce
- Introduction of new roles such as trainee nurse apprenticeships and physician associates
- New ways of working to deliver an integrated workforce culture, focused on patient centred care
- Supporting individuals, organisations and systems with leadership development
We utilise the HEE STAR tool as a framework for workforce transformation, which supports learning both within and from outside of South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw.
