An event has taken place in Barnsley for local people affected by cancer who would like to access support and training opportunities to help them become more involved in improving cancer services.

Hosted by the Macmillan Living With and Beyond Cancer Programme and taking place at The Core, companies exhibiting included Mind Sheffield, Recovery College Barnsley, Barclays and Cancer Research Yorkshire.

Experts from each organisation were on hand to talk to visitors about the training and information they could offer, with topics covered including IT skills, mindfulness and confidence building.

Sally Furness, Learning and Development Lead for the Macmillan Living With and Beyond Cancer Programme, co-ordinated the event.

She said: “We were really pleased with the success of the roadshow.

“The event provided a fantastic opportunity for networking, for different organisations to make connections and, most importantly, for those who have had an experience of cancer to establish what training support they have access to.”

Eileen Jones attended on the day and used it as an opportunity to chat with several of the organisations exhibiting, as well as network with other visitors.

She added: “I spoke to Barclays and found this very interesting to hear about all the different areas offered by them – it’s useful to know they can help with IT skills.

“I found Cancer Research very interesting. I had quite a lengthy chat with this gentleman

“I thought it was a good mix of businesses to come in and explain what services they can offer.”
