At a one-off workshop we are holding in May, we will be discussing what can be done differently to better support those who are bereaved by suicide and to raise awareness to support other vulnerable people and prevent suicide in South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw. We particularly hope to explore the portrayal of suicide by the media and the role of social media.
If you have been affected by suicide and would be willing to share your experiences with us on video you can find out more below:
Why get involved?
You might not know that South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw (SYB) has a higher suicide rate than the England average. The main aim of our suicide prevention work is to reduce the number of suicides in SYB by 10%.
There is substantial evidence that if extensive detail is published about a method of suicide, or if the coverage is widespread and/or sensationalist this can encourage suicidal behaviour among those who may be vulnerable. There is also evidence that shows stories of hope and recovery can be positive for vulnerable people.
About the video
We are making a short video and would like to speak to bereaved families/individuals who have been affected by suicide willing to share their experiences. The video will be shown during a workshop we are hosting in May and potentially online thereafter.
We are keen to know what experiences of press coverage or information shared online/social media may have been like for you on top of coping with the devastation. The work we are doing will focus on what can be done differently to better support those who are bereaved and to raise awareness to support other vulnerable people and prevent suicide.
Finer details
Bereavement is a deeply personal experience so be assured this will be done with the upmost care and respect.
The filming will be arranged with you for a convenient time in early May in your own home or close by at a convenient location and undertaken by an experienced team.
